Some 1,500 people came to show Trevi their support at the mass in Monterrey.

"She's made a journey from heaven to hell, and we just want her to start recording again," one fan said.

"Nobody, but nobody, can fill the gap that she left behind," local fan club founder Cecilia Martinez said.

The singer once known for her wild hair, torn tights, rebellious lyrics and raunchy stage shows, arrived at the church with family members, her lawyer and her boyfriend.

Screaming fans waved placards and it took 10 minutes for church officials to quieten the crowd so that the mass could begin.

Trevi held her two-year-old son, Angel Gabriel, during the service and left through a side door to avoid hundreds of journalists when it had finished.

Charges dropped

Wednesday's verdict came nearly five years after the singer's arrest on charges of rape, kidnapping and corruption of minors.

She had fled Mexico in 1998, sparking a police search across Latin America, before being arrested in Brazil in 2000 and extradited back.

Prosecutors had accused Trevi and her manager, Sergio Andrade, of using the star's rebellious image to attract teenage girls, who were then abused.

The singer and two members of her backing band were absolved of the charges but separate legal proceedings against Mr Andrade will continue.

During the 1990s Trevi sold more than five million records before her career was engulfed by scandal.
